| Leaving San Francisco through Mill Valley and down to Stinson Beach, you find a calm coming over you, even though the road is twisty and awesome you just take it easy because you are discovering one of the special places on earth. I could use all the superlatives in the dictionary, but still not find a true fit. |
| Riding along the coastline, there are many small fishing villages to visit, and mile after mile of breathtaking wooded hillsides, you are sometimes hundreds of feet above the ocean, and at other times at ocean level. California has built many scenic overlooks for your enjoyment. I think there is one around Point Arena where you look down and see seals lying about barking and enjoying the spot as much as you will. Mendocino is another must for a visit, quaint, laid-back and picturesque. |
| Leaving the coastline you will go inland, to visit the majestic Redwoods. This is a truly awesome experience. These towering trees dwarf any living thing you have ever seen. The road gets twisty and becomes a motorcycle video game which goes on for miles. The climate changes as you leave the coast and many times is the exact opposite of what you had on the PCH. You are entering logging country now, and the road starts going through large expanses of forest with wildlife abounding. |
| Now for a ride on The Avenue of The Giants, get your camera ready its postcard time. You are riding through a state park that is a forest of towering old growth Redwoods. Take your time and take many pictures because you will never see anything like this again. |
| Still heading inland you will enter the Trinity National Forest and more incredible scenery with sweeping curves. |
| Lassen Volcanic National Park is next and is one cool place. This is like a ride into the back country. Narrow roads take you winding through the forest. You will see, Lassen Volcano which is listed as inactive, but that is what they said about Mt. St. Helens too. This is just a great place to go slow and explore. |
| Lake Tahoe is next and what a spectacular sight! But let's not get ahead of ourselves because there's a great ride to get there. Now you are going through the rolling forests of inland California. The air is so clean and the smells of the white pine, fir and spruce are so delightful. Down into Truckee, where the Donner Party had some old friends for dinner just east of Truckee. You’ve reached Lake Tahoe, which must be the bluest, most beautiful lake I have ever seen. It is the second deepest lake in the United States and the tenth deepest in the world, with a maximum depth measured at 1645 ft. |
| Heading south from Lake Tahoe you will see a wide variety of terrain, mountains, valleys and even a little desert before you turn west and enter the crown jewel of California, Yosemite National Park. This wonderland is one of the most inspiring places in North America. Nature’s gift to all of us, Yosemite will give you memories for a lifetime. |
| Your last turn to the west will take you down more twisties and through the nation's richest farmland before returning to beautiful San Francisco.
